05What is NAATI CCL course? →

The Credentialed Community Language Test (CCL) is an assessment of your language abilities at a community level. The CCL Test is generally taken by the applicants who are looking to lodge a point-based visa application. On successfully passing the test, applicants are awarded five bonus points. These bonus points are also referred to as Credentialed Community Language Points. This test is not a professional certification. If you pass the CCL test, you are not certified to work as an interpreter or a translator.

06How Is the NAATI Test Assessed? →

A minimum of two examiners will assess a candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in English and a LOTE.

Two significant factors that contribute to assessment are:

  • Language Quality – competency in both English and LOTE.
  • Language Register – the level of formality with which a candidate transfers the meaning.

Marks are deducted for errors. Examiners consider the types of errors in your performance and how these impact on your overall communication.

Errors for which the examiners deduct a candidate’s score are:

  • Accuracy (correctness of information)
  • Distortions (misrepresentation of information)
  • Omissions (removal of information)
  • Insertions (addition of information)

Each examiner awards your results individually. In situations where the examiners disagree about the performance of a candidate, additional examiners will assess your test to help determine your result.

07What is the passing mark for NAATI CCL? →

The Test comprises of two dialogues: each worth 45 marks. In order to pass the test, a candidate requires at least 29 marks in each dialogue and an overall score of 63 out of 90.

The result for the CCL Test will be given as:

  • Pass: 63 or higher (marks out of 90)
  • Marginal Fail: between 58 and 62.5 (marks out of 90)
  • Clear Fail: less than 58 (marks out of 90)

In situations where a candidate achieves 23 out of 45 in Dialogue 1, 41 out of 45 in Dialogue 2 and an Overall Score of 64 out of 90, the result given will be CLEAR FAIL as the candidate hasn’t achieved required score in Dialogue 1 (i.e. 29).

Results are sent via email within 4-6 weeks of the test date and are valid for three years from the date of issue.

Clear Fail results are unable to apply for a review of their test due to the statistical improbability of the result being overturned.

NAATI CCL Test Guidelines

Test Description

The CCL tests consist of two dialogues. Each exam dialogue is a discussion between a speaker of your LOTE (Language Other Than English) and an English speaker. Once you hear the chime, you must activate each tape and begin your interpretation. The monologues in the tests consist of two segments- LOTE and English.

The conversations in the CCL tests occur in various settings and situations that candidates might face.

To successfully pass the NAATI CCL test, candidates must be able to:

  • Participate in situations where relatively straightforward information gets exchanged without much deviance from accepted pronunciation, expression, style, and register norms.
  • Give meaning to the speakers' words and exhibit precise comprehension and production in English and the LOTE.

Test Format

The NAATI CCL tests are conducted online from Monday to Friday.

The test consists of two recordings of dialogue, where each dialogue is a conversation between a native speaker of any Language Other Than English (LOTE). Each of the two discussions is approx. 300 words, broken up into sections of about 35 words each, half of which is in English and the other half in the LOTE.

Since the NAATI CCL test is conducted online, you can attempt it from anywhere in the world. Candidates must take note that all tests run according to the Canberra time.

You can find further details about the NAATI CCL test format and other relevant information on their official website - https://www.naati.com.au/services/ccl/.

Topics Covered

The dialogues used for the test are based on real-life events you will encounter in your day-to-day life in Australia and reflect Australian culture. They are specially curated and designed to test your comprehension and communication skills in both languages.

The topics covered in the test may include:

  • Business
  • Community
  • Consumer Affairs
  • Education
  • Employment
  • Finances
  • Health
  • Housing
  • Immigration/Settlement
  • Insurance
  • Legal
  • Social Services

How is the test assessed?

As a candidate, your efficiency in English and LOTE communication will get assessed by a minimum of two examiners.

You must note that any error will result in a loss of points. Additionally, the examiners will consider your mistakes while performing and how they affect your overall communication.

The two key factors that will affect your scores in this assessment are:

  • Language Quality: Your competency and proficiency in English and LOTE.
  • Language Register: The degree of formality with which a candidate conveys the meaning.
